Have you ever walked into a busy restaurant and immediately wanted to leave?
The music isn’t that loud. The lights aren’t that bright. Nobody is doing anything particularly unusual. Yet somehow the conversations at the tables around you, dishes clattering in the kitchen, music overhead, servers moving past, lights reflecting from the windows, and the person sitting across from you all seem to be competing for your attention at the same time.
Someone else may barely notice any of it.
You notice everything.
Or perhaps the grocery store does it. The office. An airport. A crowded event. A room where several conversations are happening at once.
By the time you leave, you’re exhausted—and you may wonder why something that seems so ordinary to everyone else requires so much effort from you.
The answer may involve more than simply being distracted or “sensitive.”
It may have something to do with how your brain processes the enormous amount of sensory information it receives every moment.
Your Brain Is Constantly Processing the World Around You
At any given moment, your brain is receiving an extraordinary amount of information.
Your eyes are taking in light, movement, color, depth, faces, objects, and changes in your surroundings. Your ears are receiving voices, music, machinery, traffic, and background noise. Your skin is detecting temperature, pressure, clothing, and touch.
And that’s only part of the picture.
Your brain is also receiving information about where your body is in space, whether you’re moving, how you’re balanced, and what your muscles and joints are doing.
If you had to consciously process every piece of that information with equal importance, getting through an ordinary day would be incredibly difficult.
Fortunately, that’s not normally how the system works.
Your brain is constantly detecting, organizing, prioritizing, integrating, and responding to sensory information. Some information becomes important enough to demand your attention. Other information can remain in the background.
You probably don’t spend your entire day thinking about how your shirt feels against your shoulders.
Until you do.
You don’t consciously monitor every conversation happening across a restaurant.
Until you can’t tune them out.
And you don’t normally have to think about every movement your body makes as you walk across a room while carrying a cup of coffee and talking to someone.
Your brain and body manage an enormous amount of this work automatically.
When that processing requires more effort, however, everyday environments can become much more demanding.
What Happens When Your Brain Can’t Easily Ignore What’s Unimportant?
Imagine you’re sitting across from a friend in a restaurant.
Your goal seems simple: listen to your friend.
But your brain may simultaneously be processing:
- your friend’s voice,
- the conversation at the next table,
- music from the speakers,
- silverware hitting plates,
- people walking through your peripheral vision,
- the brightness of the lights,
- the smell of food,
- the feeling of the chair against your body,
- your own body position,
- and the movement required to eat while continuing the conversation.
Your brain doesn’t necessarily need to stop receiving all that other information.
It needs to determine what matters most right now.
If competing sensory information continually demands attention, something as ordinary as following a conversation may require considerably more cognitive effort.
That’s one reason sensory overload isn’t necessarily about having unusually good hearing or being unable to tolerate a particular sound.
The challenge can involve how sensory information is registered, prioritized, combined, and responded to.
Research with autistic adults illustrates just how complex this can be. Sensory differences can include heightened responses, reduced responses, and sensory-seeking experiences—and can occur across multiple sensory systems.
In other words, sensory processing isn’t simply a volume knob turned too high.
Sensory Processing Isn’t Just About Autism
Sensory differences are strongly associated with autism, and differences in sensory reactivity are part of the diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Research indicates that sensory differences frequently persist into adolescence and adulthood.
But autistic adults aren’t the only adults who may experience them.
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis involving more than 5,000 participants found significantly greater sensory sensitivity, sensory avoidance, sensory seeking, and low sensory registration among people with ADHD compared with control groups. The researchers included studies of both children and adults, although substantially more research has been conducted with children.
Adult studies have also reported sensory hyper- and hyposensitivity in ADHD, and experimental research has identified differences involving tactile sensitivity and sensory processing.
Anxiety can further complicate the picture. When your brain and body are already in a heightened state, sensory experiences and your response to them may feel different.
And sometimes an adult simply knows:
“Busy places exhaust me.”
A diagnostic label alone doesn’t tell us exactly why.
That’s one reason we think it’s important to understand the individual rather than assume that everyone with the same diagnosis experiences the world in the same way.
It’s Not Just the Five Senses
Most of us learned about five senses in school:
Sight. Hearing. Touch. Taste. Smell.
They’re important—but they aren’t the whole sensory story.
Two additional systems are especially relevant to how your brain and body navigate the world.
Your Vestibular System
Your vestibular system provides information related to movement, head position, and balance.
It helps your brain understand whether you’re moving, changing direction, accelerating, turning your head, or maintaining your position relative to gravity.
Think about walking through a crowded airport while looking for a gate number.
You’re moving forward. People are moving around you. Your eyes are searching overhead signs. You may be turning your head while continuing to walk. Perhaps you’re pulling a suitcase while avoiding someone crossing your path.
Your visual, vestibular, motor, and other systems have to continually exchange information to help you navigate the environment.
Your Proprioceptive System
Proprioception provides information from muscles and joints that helps your brain understand where your body is and what it’s doing.
It’s part of why you can reach for your coffee without staring at your arm throughout the movement or walk up stairs without visually inspecting the position of each joint.
Research and clinical sensory-processing measures for autistic adults include not only sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, but also vestibular, proprioceptive, kinesthetic, and multisensory processing.
This matters because sometimes what feels like a “sensory problem” may involve several systems interacting rather than one isolated sense.
Why Is One Busy Place Fine While Another Is Exhausting?
This is one of the most interesting things about sensory processing.
You may love a crowded concert but hate a crowded grocery store.
You may function beautifully in a busy workplace but find a family gathering exhausting.
Or perhaps you can handle a particular environment easily one day and find the exact same environment overwhelming another day.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the experience isn’t real.
Context matters.
Predictability can matter. Control can matter. Fatigue can matter. The type and combination of sensory information can matter. What you’re being asked to do while processing that information can matter.
Research involving autistic adults has specifically highlighted the importance of context, control, tolerance, management strategies, and other people in shaping sensory experiences.
Think again about our restaurant.
Sitting alone in the exact same room and listening to music may be relatively easy.
Now add a conversation you need to follow.
Then add several nearby conversations.
Then ask you to make a decision about something important.
The sensory environment hasn’t merely become louder.
The demands on your brain have changed.
Sensory Overload Can Affect More Than Comfort
When an environment becomes overwhelming, it’s tempting to think of the problem simply as discomfort.
But sensory processing can intersect with much more.
If your brain is devoting substantial resources to sorting through competing information, there may be fewer resources readily available for the task you’re actually trying to accomplish.
Following a conversation can become harder.
Concentrating can become harder.
Making decisions can become harder.
Coordinating movement while simultaneously processing information can become harder.
You may become irritable or anxious. You may need to leave. Or you may successfully remain in the environment while using far more mental and physical effort than anyone around you realizes.
That last possibility is particularly important.
Looking comfortable and being comfortable aren’t necessarily the same thing.
An adult may appear perfectly capable throughout a demanding workday, social event, or family gathering and still arrive home completely depleted.
That’s not something we should dismiss simply because nobody else could see the effort involved.
Sometimes the Brain Needs More Input, Not Less
There’s another side of sensory processing that receives less attention.
Not everyone experiencing sensory differences is trying to escape sensory input.
Some people seek it.
Movement may feel organizing. Deep pressure may be calming. Someone may bounce a leg, pace while thinking, repeatedly manipulate an object, seek strong flavors, prefer loud music, or enjoy intense physical activity.
Other people may not readily notice certain sensory information at all.
This is why reducing sensory processing to “hypersensitivity” misses a large part of the picture.
Research with autistic adults describes hyperreactivity, hyporeactivity, and sensory-seeking experiences. ADHD research likewise reports patterns involving sensitivity, avoidance, low registration, and seeking.
Different systems can even behave differently within the same person.
The question isn’t simply:
“Are you sensory sensitive?”
A better question is:
“How does your individual brain and body respond to different kinds of sensory information?”
Avoiding Everything Isn’t Always the Only Answer
Sometimes changing the environment is exactly the right thing to do.
Headphones can help. Lower lighting can help. A quieter workspace can help. Taking breaks can help. Choosing a seat away from a busy walkway can help.
There is nothing inherently wrong with making an environment work better for your brain.
But at NeuroFiT Connections, we also ask another question:
Are there underlying functional skills that may benefit from additional development?
That distinction is important.
The objective isn’t to force someone to tolerate an environment that is painful, overwhelming, or unnecessary. Nor is the objective to eliminate useful self-regulatory behaviors simply because they look unusual to somebody else.
Instead, we want to understand what is happening.
Is visual processing demanding significant effort?
Are balance, movement, and proprioceptive information part of the picture?
What happens when cognitive and motor demands are combined?
How efficiently can someone maintain attention while other information competes for it?
Are timing and coordination contributing?
Are several systems interacting?
Those aren’t questions we can answer simply because someone tells us they have ADHD, anxiety, or autism.
We have to assess the individual.

Can the Adult Brain Become Better at Processing Information?
The idea that the brain essentially becomes fixed after childhood is outdated.
The adult brain retains the capacity for neuroplasticity—the ability to change in response to experience, learning, and practice.
Research into perceptual learning has demonstrated experience-dependent changes in adult sensory systems. Studies have shown that adults can improve particular perceptual abilities through practice, although an important scientific caveat is that learning can be highly specific to what was actually trained.
That caveat matters.
Neuroplasticity doesn’t mean that doing any arbitrary “brain exercise” will improve everything.
And neuroplasticity itself does not prove that a particular program will produce a particular outcome.
What it tells us is something both simpler and enormously important:
The adult brain retains the capacity to learn and adapt.
That gives us a scientific reason to think about development and learning in adulthood—not merely compensation.

When an adult tells us that busy environments are exhausting, we don’t want to immediately assume we know why.

What information is competing for attention?
Which environments are difficult?
Which aren’t?
Does movement change the experience?

And what does the Brain & Body Assessment show us about the individual systems involved?
When appropriate, those findings can become the foundation for individualized Brain & Body Training. Activities may involve visual or auditory processing, balance, coordination, movement, timing, proprioception, cognition, primitive reflex activities, or combinations of several demands.
As abilities develop, activities can be progressively adjusted.
But the goal isn’t to become better at doing exercises at NeuroFiT.
The goal is to develop skills that have the potential to matter outside the training room.
The World Doesn’t Have to Feel the Same to Everyone
Two people can walk into the same restaurant and have completely different experiences.
One barely notices the background noise.
The other notices the music, conversations, movement, lights, smells, chair, people walking behind them, and the effort required to keep listening to the person sitting across the table.
Neither experience is imaginary.
And knowing that someone has autism, ADHD, anxiety—or no diagnosis at all—doesn’t tell us everything about why their experience is different.
That’s where curiosity becomes much more useful than assumption.
The goal isn’t to make the world quieter. It’s to understand why your brain and body may be working so hard to navigate it—and whether there are skills we can strengthen to make that work easier.

What does sensory overload feel like in adults?
Sensory overload can feel different from one person to another. You might have difficulty concentrating or following a conversation, become irritable or anxious, feel physically uncomfortable, struggle to make decisions, or develop a strong desire to leave the environment.
For some adults, the most noticeable effect isn’t what happens during the experience at all. It’s how depleted they feel afterward.
Is sensory overload always a sign of autism?
No. Sensory differences are common among autistic people, but experiencing sensory overload does not by itself mean that someone is autistic.
Sensory-processing differences have also been reported in people with ADHD and other conditions, and individual sensory experiences vary considerably. If you’re concerned about a medical or mental health condition, an appropriate licensed professional can help determine whether a diagnostic evaluation is warranted.
Can adults with ADHD experience sensory overload?
Yes. Research has found differences in sensory processing among people with ADHD, including patterns involving sensory sensitivity, avoidance, seeking, and reduced registration of sensory information.
ADHD can also affect attention and the ability to manage competing demands, so an environment containing many simultaneous sources of information may be particularly demanding for some adults.
Why can I handle a busy environment one day but not another?
Your ability to navigate a demanding environment isn’t necessarily identical every day. Fatigue, stress, predictability, how much control you have over the environment, what sensory information is present, and what else your brain is being asked to do can all influence the experience.
That’s why the same restaurant, workplace, store, or social event may feel manageable at one time and much more demanding at another.
Can sensory processing improve in adulthood?
The adult brain retains the capacity to learn and adapt through neuroplasticity. Research into perceptual learning demonstrates that adults can improve specific sensory and perceptual abilities through experience and practice.
That doesn’t mean every sensory difficulty can be eliminated, nor does neuroplasticity guarantee that a particular exercise or program will produce a specific result. It does mean that adulthood does not automatically mean the brain has lost its capacity for learning and development.
