You sit down to answer an email you’ve been avoiding for three days. Five minutes later, you’re checking another tab. Then your phone. Then you remember that you need to order dog food, which somehow reminds you of something you wanted to look up.
Twenty minutes later, the email is still sitting there with the cursor blinking after “Hi Jennifer,” and you’re wondering why something that should take five minutes feels almost physically difficult to finish.
But later that evening, you start working on something you actually enjoy. Three hours disappear. You barely notice the time, you haven’t checked your phone, and you may have forgotten dinner.
If someone interrupts you, you’re genuinely surprised to discover that apparently the rest of the world has continued operating while you’ve been busy.
Which raises a perfectly reasonable question:
If I can focus like that, how can I possibly have an attention problem?
The answer begins with something that’s easy to misunderstand about ADHD. Attention isn’t simply something you either have or don’t have.
ADHD Isn’t an Inability to Pay Attention
The word attention-deficit makes ADHD sound as though the brain has an insufficient supply of attention. But that’s an incomplete way to think about it.
Adults with ADHD can have difficulty paying attention, staying on task, organizing activities, completing projects, managing time, and resisting distraction. Those difficulties have to be persistent enough to interfere with everyday functioning to be part of an ADHD diagnosis.
That doesn’t mean an adult with ADHD can’t concentrate intensely under the right circumstances. In fact, the CDC notes that adults with ADHD may have difficulty completing lengthy tasks unless those tasks are interesting.
That distinction matters because the challenge may not always be “Can my brain focus?”
A more useful question may be: “How reliably can my brain direct, sustain, shift, and disengage attention when the situation requires it?”
Those are very different questions.
Consider Two Tasks
Imagine I give you two things to do.
Task A: Complete a tedious expense report involving 37 receipts, three missing dates, and a website designed sometime during the Clinton administration.
Task B: Research the camera you’ve been thinking about buying.
Task B starts innocently enough. You compare two cameras, which leads to lenses, which leads to sensor size. Obviously, you now need to understand sensor size.
Before long, you’re watching a 22-minute review from a photographer in Norway who has extremely strong opinions about autofocus. Two hours later, you could probably teach a community-college course on mirrorless cameras.
The expense report?
Still 37 receipts.
Same brain. Same person. Very different attention.
Interest Changes the Equation
Some activities naturally give the brain more to work with. They’re interesting, novel, challenging, urgent, or personally meaningful. They may provide immediate feedback or a clear reward.
Other activities offer very little of that. Sorting receipts doesn’t change much from minute to minute. Neither does folding laundry, entering information into a spreadsheet, reading a dry report, or sitting through a meeting that could have been an email.
For someone who has difficulty regulating attention, that difference can matter enormously. Research into ADHD has examined differences involving reward and reinforcement, although the science is considerably more complicated than the internet-friendly explanation that an “ADHD brain only works when it’s interested.” Reinforcement can influence performance in ADHD, but researchers are still working to understand exactly how reward, motivation, attention, and other brain systems interact.
So we shouldn’t reduce ADHD to interesting = focus, boring = no focus. But interest can certainly change the demands placed on attention.
Then There Is Urgency
Here’s another familiar scenario. You have two weeks to complete a project. For most of those two weeks, getting started feels surprisingly difficult.
Then Day 14 arrives.
Suddenly you become astonishingly productive. The project that seemed impossible to begin three days ago is now getting your complete attention. You’re working quickly, making decisions, solving problems, and wondering why you couldn’t simply have done this last Tuesday.
Because Tuesday and IT IS DUE IN FOUR HOURS are not the same situation.
Urgency changes the environment around the task. The consequences become immediate, the deadline becomes concrete, and competing priorities may suddenly become much easier to ignore.
That doesn’t mean procrastination automatically indicates ADHD. Plenty of people procrastinate, and ADHD requires a much broader pattern of symptoms and impairment. Sleep problems, anxiety, depression, and other conditions can also produce difficulties that resemble ADHD.
For some adults with ADHD, though, urgency can become one of the tools they’ve learned to use to get their attention where it needs to go.
The problem is that panic is an expensive productivity system.
What About Hyperfocus?
This is where the conversation gets particularly interesting. Many adults with ADHD describe periods of extremely intense concentration, often called hyperfocus. They may become so absorbed in an activity that hours pass without their realizing it.
Hyperfocus isn’t currently one of the core diagnostic criteria for ADHD, and research on it is still developing. Research reviews suggest that deep-concentration experiences are reported by adults with ADHD, while also emphasizing problems with inconsistent definitions, measurement, and a still-limited evidence base.
So hyperfocus shouldn’t be treated as proof of ADHD or as a diagnostic test. But the experience does illustrate an important point about attention.
Sometimes the difficulty isn’t getting attention turned on. It’s controlling where it goes.
Being Able to Focus Isn’t the Same as Being Able to Control Focus
Imagine attention as a flashlight. The problem isn’t that the flashlight never turns on. Sometimes it points exactly where you need it, while other times something interesting catches the beam and pulls it somewhere else.
And sometimes it locks onto one spot so completely that moving the beam somewhere else becomes surprisingly difficult.
That’s very different from simply having a dim flashlight.
Everyday attention requires several abilities working together. You may need to decide what deserves attention, ignore competing information, maintain focus long enough to accomplish the task, remember what you’re trying to accomplish, notice when you’ve wandered off course, and shift your attention when circumstances change.
That helps explain something adults tell us frequently:
“I can focus. I just can’t always focus on what I’m supposed to be focusing on.”
And Sometimes Starting Is the Real Problem
There’s another wrinkle. You may actually be perfectly capable of concentrating once you’re engaged with something. The hard part may be getting engaged in the first place.
That’s why attention overlaps with several other executive functions we’ve discussed in this series, including task initiation, working memory, organization, planning, and cognitive flexibility. An unfinished task doesn’t automatically tell us which part of the process broke down.
Maybe you couldn’t start. Maybe you started but couldn’t sustain attention. You might have forgotten what you were doing, had something else capture your attention, struggled to return after an interruption, or encountered a task with seventeen vaguely defined steps and no obvious place to begin.
From the outside, all of those situations can look exactly the same: nothing got done.
Inside the brain, they may be very different problems.
This Is Why “Just Try Harder” Isn’t Particularly Helpful
Most adults who struggle with attention have already tried trying harder—frequently. They may have developed elaborate systems involving calendars, reminders, alarms, lists, sticky notes, apps, deadlines, accountability partners, coffee, background music, headphones, and timers.
And occasionally there’s the highly sophisticated executive-function strategy of placing an important object directly in front of the door so you physically cannot leave the house without encountering it.
Some of those strategies can be extremely useful. The more interesting question is what happens when the strategy isn’t there—or when the demands become greater than the system can handle.
If managing attention requires enormous conscious effort all day, the person may still appear productive from the outside.
Performance doesn’t always tell us how much effort the performance required.
Your Environment Matters Too
Attention doesn’t happen in isolation. Imagine trying to complete a report in a quiet office. Now imagine completing the same report while notifications appear on your computer, your phone buzzes, two coworkers are talking nearby, someone walks past your desk every 90 seconds, and you’re waiting for an important email.
Same report. Very different attentional demands.
Sensory processing, working memory, emotional state, sleep, stress, task complexity, movement, and environmental distraction can all influence how difficult it is to stay engaged. That’s one reason we don’t want to look at attention as though it were a single switch somewhere in the brain.
The brain and body work as a system.
So Does This Mean I Have ADHD?
Not necessarily. Everyone experiences fluctuations in attention. Everyone gets distracted, most people procrastinate occasionally, and nearly all of us find it easier to concentrate on something fascinating than something tedious.
ADHD involves a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning. Symptoms must begin in childhood, be present in more than one setting, and not be better explained by another condition. A qualified healthcare professional evaluates that broader pattern rather than relying on any single behavior.

Adult brains retain the ability to learn and adapt through neuroplasticity. That means repeated, appropriately challenging practice can support learning and skill development throughout adulthood.
Neuroplasticity doesn’t prove that every exercise works for every person or that every skill automatically transfers into everyday life. It gives us the biological rationale for why practice and learning remain possible after childhood.
The exercise is practice. Life is the test.
Maybe the Better Question Isn’t “Can I Focus?”
If you can spend three hours researching cameras but struggle to spend fifteen minutes completing an expense report, that doesn’t automatically prove anything about ADHD. But it does tell us something interesting: your capacity for attention clearly exists.
So instead of asking “Can I focus?”, it may be more useful to ask “What helps my brain focus—and what makes directing that attention harder?”
When does attention come easily, and when does it require enormous effort? What happens when you’re interrupted? Can you shift away from something interesting when you need to? Can you stay with something after the novelty disappears?
And perhaps most importantly, can you direct attention based on importance, even when the task itself isn’t particularly rewarding?
Those questions tell us much more than simply deciding whether someone has “good attention” or “bad attention.”
Because sometimes the challenge isn’t whether your brain can pay attention.
It’s whether you can reliably get that attention where you need it, when you need it, for as long as you need it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Have ADHD If You Can Focus Really Well Sometimes?
Yes. ADHD does not mean a person is incapable of concentration. Adults with ADHD can experience considerable variation in their ability to direct and sustain attention depending on the task and situation. Diagnosis depends on a persistent pattern of symptoms and impairment, not an inability to focus on everything.
Why Can I Focus on Things I Enjoy but Not Things I Need to Do?
Interest can change the attentional demands of a task. Reward, novelty, feedback, urgency, task complexity, and other factors may also influence engagement. The CDC specifically notes difficulty completing lengthy tasks unless they’re interesting among possible adult ADHD symptoms.
Is Hyperfocus a Symptom of ADHD?

Yes. Anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and some physical conditions can cause symptoms that overlap with ADHD, which is one reason a comprehensive professional evaluation is important.
Is Being Easily Distracted Always an Attention Problem?
Not necessarily. The environment matters, and distraction can involve more than attention alone. Working memory, sensory processing, stress, fatigue, emotional state, and the number of competing demands can all affect someone’s ability to remain engaged with a task.
